Background information on the Korean War
The Korean war was fought between the North Korean forces and the South Korean forces. The American military was allies with South Korean forces. The North Koreans belived in communism and we, the US, belived in democracy.
We were in the middle of the "red scare" and were frightened by communism. We fought North Korea because we wanted to put an end to communism. Not only was North Korea communist, but they did not believe in our Democracy. They also happened to be in the middle of a territory war with South Korea and we wanted to back-up South Korea, so we went to war with North Korea.
The Korean War was fought in North and South Korea. The main border between the two countries during war was the 38th Parallel. This is where most of the battles were fought. The war started on June 25, 1950 and ended in 1953. There was no offical end to the war itself.
The war was fought because South Korea and North Korea did not believe in the same government. It started because North Korea invaded South Korea. The war ended on July 27, 1953. It ended because all sides involved in the war came to an agreement. President Eisenhower promised that he would handle the war better than former president Harry Truman.
